If your “10% OFF” hits everyone on page load – including buyers already in the cart, logged-in wholesale customers, and shoppers mid-PDP – you trained people to close popups. The code in Shopify Admin → Discounts still works. The campaign does not, because it ignored who they are and where they are.
Match the offer to the shopper. Guests on your sale collection get one rule. People in the cart get another – or none. Theme settings rarely expose that control. Apps that extend the Online Store can [Source: Shopify Help Center, apps and themes].
Open Fomio Sales Popups and aim FOMO rules with Customer Groups, Display On, and Trigger Conditions. Below are three playbooks you can build today. If the app is not installed yet, start with set up a Shopify sales popup, then come back to tune targeting.
Why sitewide Shopify popups kill intent
One overlay for every session trains people to ignore you
A sitewide page-load popup treats a first-time guest on your Summer Sale collection the same as a logged-in customer opening the cart. Both see the same creative. One might need a subscribe-to-reveal code; the other needs cart reassurance or nothing at all. When the overlay is wrong, close-rate goes up and trust goes down – a Customer Experience problem, not a “need a bigger discount” problem.
Flip the default: start from who / where / when, then attach the offer. Fomio’s editor is built that way under Target the right pages and visitors.
The three levers: who, where, when (Customer Groups, Display On, Triggers)
Who – Customer Groups
On a FOMO rule, Customer Groups can include all customers, logged-in customers, guest users, specific customers, customer tags, or customer segments. Use guests for first-order subscribe-to-reveal. Exclude logged-in wholesale tags from a DTC flash sale. Keep “all customers” for true storewide announcements only.
Where – Display On (products and pages)
Display On (Products) supports all products, specific products, product tags, specific collections, or none. Display on Pages supports all pages, homepage, cart / mini cart, or specific pages. A collection sale belongs on that collection – not on every blog post. A cart offer belongs on cart or add-to-cart, not on every homepage paint.
When – Trigger Conditions and Active Period
Triggers include after a specific time, on page load, on scroll, on exit intent (desktop browsing only), and on add-to-cart. Pair them with an Active Period (start and end dates) so the rule turns off when the Shopify promo ends. Exit intent is not available for mobile in Fomio – use time, scroll, page load, or add-to-cart when you need phone coverage.
Redeemable codes still live in Shopify Admin → Discounts; Fomio Inputs or Selects them on the rule [Source: Shopify Help Center, discounts].
Three intent playbooks you can build in Fomio today
1. Guest first-order – Subscribe to show discount
Goal: capture email (or phone) before revealing a first-order code.
- Popup Type: Subscribe to show discount code
- Customer Groups: Guest users
- Display on Pages: Homepage + key collection pages (not cart)
- Trigger: After a few seconds, or on scroll – avoid instant page load if bounce is already high
- Extras: Hide after customer subscribes = Yes; optional floating Trigger Button (“GET DISCOUNT NOW”)
Create the code in Shopify Admin → Discounts first, then Select or Input it on the rule.
2. Collection sale – Offer discount coupon
Goal: show a dated sale only where the catalog matches.
- Popup Type: Offer discount coupon
- Display On: Specific collection (for example Summer Sale)
- Customer Groups: All customers, or guests if logged-in buyers already have a different price list
- Trigger: On scroll or after specific time
- Active Period: Sale start and end dates
- Optional: Enable Countdown Timer = Yes on this promo rule when the end date is hard
3. Cart hesitation – cart page or add-to-cart
Goal: help shoppers who already signaled purchase intent – without another homepage blast.
- Popup Type: Offer discount coupon or Announcement (free shipping reminder, etc.)
- Display on Pages: Cart / mini cart, or rely on Trigger = On add-to-cart
- Customer Groups: All customers, or exclude tags that already get automatic discounts
- Trigger: On add-to-cart, or show on the cart page after a short delay
Do not stack this on top of an aggressive sitewide page-load rule. One intentional cart rule beats three competing overlays.
Measure whether the rule helped (Views, Orders, Leads)
Read FOMO Rules and Analytics after traffic hits the campaign
After the rule is Active and the app embed is on, check Total Views, Interactions, Orders, and Revenue in Dashboard / Analytics, plus per-rule Views and Order Rate % in FOMO Rules. Subscribe-to-reveal campaigns should also fill Leads. If Views are high and Orders are flat, tighten Display On or change the trigger before you deepen the discount. A/B Testing is Coming Soon – optimize by editing one live rule and comparing date ranges.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I show a Shopify popup only to the right visitors?
In Fomio, set Customer Groups (e.g. guests vs logged-in), Display On for products/collections/pages, and a Trigger Condition (time, scroll, exit intent on desktop, or add-to-cart) so the FOMO rule fires in context.
What is the best trigger for a Shopify discount popup?
There is no single best trigger – match the job. First-order email capture often uses delay or scroll on homepage/collections; cart recovery leans add-to-cart or cart page; exit intent is desktop-only in Fomio.
Can I target a Fomio popup to one collection or product tag?
Yes. Display On supports all products, specific products, product tags, or specific collections, plus page targets like homepage or cart.
Does exit intent work on mobile in Fomio?
No – desktop browsing only. Use time, scroll, page load, or add-to-cart on mobile.
Aim the offer – then launch the rule
Targeting comes first; creative comes second. Fomio Sales Popups gives you three levers – Customer Groups, Display On, and Trigger Conditions – so a guest first-order, a collection sale, and a cart offer can each be their own FOMO rule with a real Active Period. Build one playbook, test it on the storefront, read Views and Orders, then add the next. Install Fomio Sales Popups on the Shopify App Store, or open FOMO Rules if you already completed setup.
