You already have a code in Shopify Admin → Discounts – or a sale collection is live – but shoppers only see it if they dig. The theme newsletter popup feels generic. A Liquid snippet works until the next theme update, then something breaks on mobile. Every visit that leaves without the offer is a quiet miss.
Shopify handles discount codes well. Themes can show a simple signup block. Neither gives you popups aimed at products, collections, guests, and triggers like scroll or exit intent [Source: Shopify Help Center, discounts]. For that, use an app with an app embed [Source: Shopify Help Center, apps and themes].
Here’s the path in Fomio Sales Popups: turn on the app embed, create one discount and promotion FOMO rule, brand it, test it on your storefront, and check that Views move – without editing theme code.
Why your theme alone makes sales popups hard
Theme popups and Liquid hacks don’t keep up with promos
Most themes ship a basic email or announcement control. That covers one “join the list” message. It does not cover a Summer Sale on specific collections, a first-order code after email signup, a floating “GET DISCOUNT NOW” button, and an Active Period you can turn off when the sale ends.
Custom Liquid (or a script in theme.liquid) lives in your theme files. The next theme update is when that popup stops showing – or covers Add to cart. Keep storefront promos in an app embed instead [Source: Shopify Help Center, apps and themes]. Then you can edit Customer Experience offers from Admin without redeploying Liquid.
Step 1 – Connect your Shopify store (enable the app embed)
Install Fomio, then turn on the embed before you expect a popup
Install Fomio Sales Popups from the Shopify App Store (Early Access / MVP is free to install for core popup features). Open the Fomio Dashboard. Step 1 is Connect your store: enable the app embed so Fomio can show on your Online Store.
In Shopify Admin go to Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds, find Fomio, switch it on, and save. Enabling the embed does not change what shoppers see until you create and activate a FOMO rule. Skip this step and storefront tests fail even when the rule looks right in the app.
Step 2 – Create a discount & promotion FOMO rule
Pick the live goal, then choose how the discount is shown
In FOMO Rules choose Create New Rule and the live goal I want to create a discount & promotion popup. (Countdown as a separate goal and promo banners are Coming Soon – don’t wait on those for your first campaign.)
Set a Rule Title you’ll recognize later (for example Summer Sale), Status to Enabled, and an Active Period with start and end dates so the promo stops when the sale ends. Under Popup Type pick one of:
- Offer discount coupon – show a code on the popup
- Subscribe to show discount code – collect email (or phone), then reveal the code
- Announcement – message only, no code required
If shoppers redeem a code at checkout, create that discount first under Shopify Admin → Discounts [Source: Shopify Help Center, discounts], then Input or Select the same code on the FOMO rule. Fomio shows and aims the campaign; it does not replace Shopify’s discount records.
Target who sees it, where, and when
Use Target the right pages and visitors so the offer is not sitewide noise:
- Customer Groups – all customers, logged in, guests, specific customers, tags, or segments
- Display On (Products) – all products, specific products, product tags, specific collections, or none
- Display on Pages – all pages, homepage, cart / mini cart, or specific pages
- Trigger Conditions – after a specific time, on page load, on scroll, on exit intent (desktop only), or on add-to-cart
For a first-order 10% offer, a common pattern is: guests (or all customers), homepage plus collection pages, trigger after a few seconds or on scroll. Keep exit intent for desktop only.
Optionally set Enable Countdown Timer to Yes when the sale has a hard end date. That is a toggle on this promo rule, not a separate Coming Soon product.
Brand the popup (worked example: ENJOY 10% OFF)
Open Popup Template. Upload a square image (recommended 1024 × 1024 px). Set Popup Shape and Image Position (Left, Right, or Background). Match colors and type to your storefront. Leave Show close button on Yes; use Hide on Mobile only if the campaign is desktop-only.
For subscribe-to-reveal, set Heading to “ENJOY 10% OFF”, a short Subheading, Subscription Type Email (or Phone), Subscribe button, and a success message. Add Reveal Offer + Button URL if the next click should open a sale collection. Optionally enable the floating Trigger Button (“GET DISCOUNT NOW”) and Hide after customer subscribes. Check Live Preview, then save – one branded rule is enough for first go-live.
Step 3 – Test the rule on your storefront and read your first stats
Confirm the popup on the Online Store, then watch Views
Back on the Dashboard, complete Step 3: test how the rule works on your storefront. Open the storefront (or theme preview) as a shopper would – right page, trigger, and customer state. If nothing appears, re-check the app embed and rule Status, then use Fomio’s Storefront Display Setup path. Saving a rule while the embed is off will not show a popup.
When visitors see the FOMO notification, Dashboard and Analytics record Views, Interactions, Orders, and Revenue. FOMO Rules also shows per-rule Views and Order Rate %. If you used Subscribe to show discount code, open Leads after the first submissions. A/B Testing is Coming Soon – optimize by editing the live rule, not by waiting on that feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set up a sales popup on Shopify with Fomio?
Install Fomio Sales Popups from the Shopify App Store, enable the app embed in your Online Store theme (Step 1), create your first FOMO rule with a type, design, and display timing (Step 2), then test it on your storefront (Step 3). Dashboard stats (Views, etc.) start once visitors see the notification.
Do I need a Shopify discount code before launching a discount popup?
Yes if the popup offers a redeemable code – create the discount in Shopify Admin → Discounts, then Input or Select that code on the FOMO rule. For Subscribe to show discount code, the code is revealed after the visitor submits their email. Announcement-only rules don’t need a code.
Can I show a Fomio popup only on certain Shopify products, collections, or pages?
Yes. Under Display On / Display on Pages you can limit to all or specific products, product tags, collections, homepage, cart/mini cart, or specific pages – and Customer Groups (all, logged-in, guests, tags, segments) as Shopify defines them for your store.
Why isn’t my Fomio popup showing on my Shopify store?
Finish Step 1 (app embed on in the theme customizer) and set the rule Status to Enabled/Active, then use Step 3’s storefront test. If it still doesn’t appear, complete Storefront Display Setup.
Does exit-intent work on mobile Shopify themes?
Exit intent in Fomio is for desktop browsing only. Use time, scroll, page load, or add-to-cart when you need coverage on mobile.
Launch your first Shopify offer without touching theme code
If your discount codes only work when shoppers already know them, use this path: app embed on, one discount and promotion FOMO rule, targeting that matches your catalog, and a branded Subscribe to show discount or offer-coupon popup you can turn off when the Active Period ends. It fits a seasonal sale, a first-order 10% email gate, a collection-only promo, or an announcement for a new drop – without another Liquid edit. See pricing (core MVP / Early Access is free to install; optional AI Popup Generator trials and AI background packs are separate), then install Fomio Sales Popups on the Shopify App Store.
