You open a collection on your phone. Page 1 is Sold out, Sold out, Sold out. The jacket that is in stock is on page 3. People leave. You still want those sold-out pages up – Google has the links, old customers have the links – you just do not want them first.

Shopify’s collection sort is Best selling, title, price, date, or Manual. None of those is “in stock first” [Source: Shopify Help Center, collection sort order]. Best selling keeps a sold-out hit at the top. Manual means you drag cards after every sale. A smart collection with inventory greater than 0 takes the product out of that collection. That is hide, not this [Source: Shopify Help Center, hiding out of stock products].

Search & Discovery can put sold-out items last in search. It does not fix the collection. If you want sold-out products at the bottom of the collection, and still on the site, that is Push down out-of-stock products in StockIQ.

Why the collection still starts with Sold out

Shopify has no “move out of stock to the end” switch. You pick one sort in Admin. Title and price do not look at stock. Manual is you, every morning, until the afternoon sale messes it up again [Source: Shopify Help Center, collection sort order].

Theme code that shuffles sold-out products in Liquid only shuffles the current page. Shopify already cut the collection into pages. Page 1 can still be all sold out. Flow can unpublish or tag when stock hits zero. It cannot reorder a collection.

How to push sold-out products to the bottom of Shopify collections

Install StockIQ. Open Collections. Turn Status on for each collection that should show in-stock first. Shopify sets that collection to Manual so the app can move products. Then set Sorted By to Best selling, title, price, or date – not Manual. StockIQ lines products up in that order, then drops sold-out ones to the bottom. Leave Sorted By on Manual and there is nothing to sort against.

Push Down Out-Of-Stock is already on. Delay is 0 days unless you change it (up to 365). Zero means it drops on the next sort, as soon as it is out. The daily sort is 02:00 in your store timezone. Gold and above get Real-time Sort; on Bronze and Silver it is a $2.99 add-on. Until that run, a product that just sold out can still sit on page 1. Sort Products & Push OOS Down Now if you want it moved today.

Shopify’s All collection is one the apps cannot touch. Create Smart Collection makes a real All that StockIQ can sort. Tag a pre-order or a promo you still want high, and turn on exclusions so those stay put. “Continue selling when out of stock” counts as out of stock unless you switch it. Restore Previous Position on Restock is only for manual collections, and it starts off.

The page stays up. In-stock just goes first.

Nothing is unpublished. The product stays on your Shopify store. The URL still works. That is the whole point of Protect search rankings – sold-out at the bottom, links still live. Hide is the other rule, if you want the product off the store, or Draft on Facebook too. Hide can 404. Use push-down when the page should stay.

You choose the collections. New ones stay off until you turn them on, unless you enable Auto Enable New Collections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does pushing sold-out products to the bottom of a Shopify collection delete them?

No. The product stays published. StockIQ only moves it down in the collections you turned on. The URL stays live. Hide is the other rule – that one takes it off the store, and can 404.

Can Shopify push out-of-stock products to the bottom of collections without an app?

Not as a rule that keeps running. You can drag a Manual collection until the next sale. Theme Liquid only moves sold-out items to the bottom of each page, not the whole collection. Search & Discovery sorts search, not the collection page. A smart collection with inventory greater than 0 removes the product from that collection [Source: Shopify Help Center, hiding out of stock products]. StockIQ changes the real order on the collections you enable.

How often does StockIQ push sold-out products down?

Bronze and Silver run once a day at the time you set (default 02:00 in your store timezone). Gold and above include Real-time Sort. On lower plans that add-on is $2.99 a month. You can also click Sort Products & Push OOS Down Now. Delay 0 moves a sold-out product on the next sort. A higher delay waits that many days after it sold out.

Show what you can sell first

You do not have to delete pages that still get traffic, or drag the grid every morning. StockIQ puts sold-out products at the bottom of the collections you pick. What you can sell stays first. The old links still work. Start on the StockIQ page, then start the 7-day free trial on the Shopify App Store.
