How do I politely follow up on the status of an order via email?

I run a Shopify store, and I’m still a bit new to this whole e-commerce thing, so converting customers is a bit challenging. My partner suggested we send follow-up emails to customers who leave their carts without checking out. I don’t know of a nice way to ask a customer if they still want to buy from our store. Any advice?

You could use various abandoned cart recovery email plugins that are available on the Shopify App Store.
Or, If you'd rather not use a plugin, you could always create your own. Things to consider when composing would be to send more than one follow-up message, offer an incentive, utilize images, and include a link to the checkout page within your email.
