Can I save abandoned carts with an auto-discount email?

Half the time, customers will add items to their carts in my Shopify store, and they will leave them there without checking out. I have been drafting ideas on how to save these unfinished orders and persuade the customers to checkout without seeming desperate. A friend of mine suggested I send out emails with abandoned cart offer discounts. Does this actually work?

Shopify comes with a built in program that allows you to automatically apply discounts to abandoned checkout recovery emails. 
Basically what this means is that when you apply a discount to your abandoned checkout emails, the customer is emailed a pre-filled cart at a discounted price. The customer then only needs to enter their payment details to complete checkout.
The only downside is that it is a bit tricky to implement as it requires you to do some coding.
